Eventually, after one particular call went against the Canucks, Coach Nielson grabbed a white towel, stuck it on the end of a spare hockey stick, and began waving it as a mock surrender. Several Canucks players joined Nielson in this act. Nielson was fined $1000, but that occurrence made history. A local businessman printed and sold thousands of towels which were quickly bought by fans and brought to the next home game where they waved the very first promotional sports towels of this kind. Chicago did end up winning that particular game against Vancouver 1-4 however Vancouver won the series 4-1 to advance to the Stanley Cup Championship that year.
