Speak that sentence–a command, really, if we're being honest–and you might create an almost Pavlovian response in a salesperson. It will take her back to the job interview where she was given this directive, designed to determine whether she was right for the position, or instead a complete dolt.
She remembers that day, that job interview, and that executive pen very clearly. It was a custom executive pen, sleek in design, with a beautifully shiny barrel printed with the name of the company she so desperately wanted to work for. She could almost see her own startled reflection in this writing implement, an executive pen to shame all executive pens. Though she knew she was supposed to be thinking of the perfect answer, she found herself wondering: "Where did that gorgeous executive pen come from?"
It probably came from Pinnacle Promotions, she thought. She knew they had custom executive pens from top brands like Cross, Balmain, Cutter & Buck, Parker. Some of the pens had rollerballs, others clicked, and still others had a handy clip. She knew how simple it was to get a company's logo, name, and information laser-engraved on these pens. And she knew what a great impression these custom executive pens made when given to a customer, a potential client, or an employee. This was no throwaway pen, chewed up by the dog or pilfered from the doctor's waiting room. These pens felt substantial in your hand, like CEO substantial, yet allowed for a light touch. Their ink flowed as smoothly and steadily as a stream.
Then she snapped out of her executive pen-related reverie and looked up at her interviewer. He was waiting, tapping that lovely executive pen on the conference table. He didn't necessarily want to hear her wax philosophic about the perfection of pens. Like Jordan Balfort in "the Wolf of Wall Street" he was telling her to "sell me this pen."
She'd studied the "sell the pen" interview question, but she couldn't make any words come out of her mouth. She was too distracted by the executive pen itself. She could only think about how, if she finally started up her own marketing agency, like she'd always dreamed about, she could order a box of executive pens from Pinnacle Promotions and use them to spread the word about her business while conveying that she was serious, sophisticated, and smart. And she wondered to herself, "Why am I deferring this dream?"
She watched the interviewer set the executive pen down on the table and cross his arms, impatiently. And then, like a jungle cat, she leapt from her seat and grabbed that custom executive pen. And she ran. Toward her future.
