The Liberty Bell
Philadelphia was founded by William Penn, a prominent Quaker looking for a place to settle without the fear of being persecuted for his religious beliefs. After receiving a charter from Charles II of England to found a new colony, Penn named the city "Philadelphia" which translates to mean "brotherly love" in the Greek language. Since its foundations, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania has been the site of many historic events, including several Revolutionary War battles and the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. The Liberty Bell, one of the best-known symbols of the Revolutionary War, represents American ideals of liberty and justice and is often replicated on souvenires. The Liberty Bell is now housed in the 45 acre Independence National Historical Park in City Center and is a must-see for anyone visiting the Delaware Valley area (which includes Philadelphia, Camden and Wilmington). In fact, people come from as far as Pittsburgh and Harrisburg to see this piece of history.
Bring Home a Phillies Jersey
Any sports lover who spends time in Philadelphia County or surrounding neighborhoods in Bucks County or Montgomery County should make it a point to watch the Phillies, Philadelphia's Major League Baseball team whose jerseys at one time included an outline of the Liberty Bell. Phillies fans- known as some of the most boisterous and dedicated fans in MLB- proudly sport red, white and blue Philadelphia apparel to show support for their team, the Delaware Valley area and even their country. Since 1984, the Phillies and their loyal fans throughout the Delaware Valley have raised and donated over $10 million to support research for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (commonly referred to as ALS or Lou Gehrig's disease) through various festivals.
Philadelphia and the Mess of Philly Cheesesteaks
Of course, any article about Philadelphia County wouldn't be complete without a discussion of the infamous Philly cheesesteak, a hoagie (or sub sandwich to those not from Reading or Wilmington) filled with thinly sliced beef, sizzling onions and melted American or provolone cheese and served steaming hot. Since their first appearance in the early 1930s, Philly cheesesteaks have become one of the most beloved foods in the country, spawning imitation sandwiches, a plethora of recipes and even multiple websites devoted to helping hungry Philadelphians find the best hoagie in the city. Just as messy as they are delicious, you can customize company napkins to help people enjoy the taste without any unsightly stains.
