Mesa for History Buffs

Despite Mesa's relatively small population, it encompasses a long east to west travel distance and expansive land area. The city boasts a rich history, as it was settled by the Hohokam civilization during the classical period. Today, the Mesa Grande Ruins are a popular Mesa tourist attraction, as they contain one of only two remaining Hohokam mounds in the metropolitan Phoenix area.Photographs and mementos from this archaeological wonder are certain to impress friends and family back at home! Other interesting locales in the Mesa area that may appeal to history fanatics include the Mesa Historical Museum, the Arizona Museum of Natural History (formerly the Mesa Southwest Museum), the Arizona Museum for Youth, and the Arizona Wing of the Commemorative Air Force. The last attraction, in particular, features an extensive collection of products related to aviation history- you can even purchase gift certificates to present to your favorite aviation buff for redemption at the gift shop or online.

Mesa: For Die-Hard Sports Fans

Mesa, Arizona is not lacking when it comes to athletic events. HoHoKam Park is home to the Chicago Cubs during their spring training, as well as the WAC Baseball Tournament. The Mesa Cubs play down the street from HoHoKam at Fitch Park, so baseball is a favorite pastime of local inhabitants. Mesa's HoHoKam Park has been the home of Chicago Cubs spring training since 1979 and holds a whopping 12,632 fans. During the fall, it is the home of the Mesa Solar Sox of the Arizona Fall League. If taking in a baseball game and collecting sports gear like Chicago Cubs, Mesa Solar Sox, or Mesa Cubs jerseys and paraphernalia does not appeal to you, several local colleges and universities host recreational athletic leagues of their own. At Arizona State University's Polytechnic Campus, intramural sports offerings include billiards, softball, and soccer, and students and alumni proudly don hats and hoodies decorated with the college's athletic mascot, Sparky. Mesa is also home to the Mesa Community College, the largest of the 10 community colleges in the Maricopa County Community College District. A prestigious athletics program is recognized throughout the state of Arizona, and fans of the Mesa Thunderbirds scour campus bookstores to obtain the hottest collegiate products.
