Atlanta Classic Car Show, Yellow Daisy Festival & The Nerd

Hello, local readers. Once again we’re here with your weekend guide, where we share our favorite things to do in and around Atlanta and point out where you can get free stuff along the way. As always, be sure to add anything we missed in the comments.

Atlanta Classic Car Show

Georgia Aquarium. Saturday, 9am – 6pm; Sunday, 10am – 5pm. Free with general admission tickets to the Aquarium.

Just when you thought the world’s largest aquarium couldn’t get any better, they present the first ever Atlanta Classic Car Show, featuring classic cars from the 1930s to present day. The rare 1927 Pierce Arrow, 1932 Lincoln KB 12 Cylinder, 1966 Ferrari 275 and the other American and European classics on display will be the driving force of your weekend.

Stone Mountain Park’s Yellow Daisy Festival

Stone Mountain Memorial Park. Thursday –  Sunday, 10am – 6pm; 10am – 7:30pm on Saturday. Free with $10 vehicle entry fee.

A great event for the entire family. The Yellow Daisy Festival has taken place for the last 42 years and is a woman’s shopping paradise for arts and crafts. Men can have some entertainment as well with a specific section just for them filled with recliners and big screen TVs playing the day’s football games. Free food (including 2,500 pounds of funnel cake batter that is expected to be consumed) and live entertainment will also be available throughout the festival.

Cocktails in the Garden

Atlanta Botanical Garden. Thursday, 6pm – 10pm. $15; free for members.

Enjoy a nice cocktail and light appetizers, mingle with friends, and sway to the tunes while exploring the Botanical Garden at night.  In honor of the Garden’s current exhibition “Chocolate: Seed to Sweet,” the event will feature a “Mocha & Mudslides” theme every Thursday night in September. Don’t miss the Canopy Walk, a concrete pathway suspended 40 feet in the air that provides visitors with a breathtaking view of the city skyline.

Southern Green Wedding Expo

Marriott Atlanta Marquis. Sunday, 2pm – 6pm. Free.

The Southern Green Wedding Expo is geared toward eco-conscious couples hoping to minimize their environmental impact by incorporating green vendors into their weddings. This event will showcase many earth-friendly exhibitors, and as is the case with any wedding expo, there will be an abundance of promotional giveaways and food and drink samples. Grab your bridal party, and even the groom- who can relax in the designated “Man Lounge,” complete with a big-screen TV and locally brewed beer- and learn how to make your wedding the green event of the season.

The Nerd

Kudzu Playhouse. Friday and Saturday, 8pm; Sunday, 3pm. $13 – $19.50.

Featuring Pinnacle’s own Snapper (Clyde) Morgan, this comedy centers on the hilarious dilemma of a young architect who is visited by a man he’s never met but who saved his life in Vietnam—the visitor turning out to be an incredibly inept, hopelessly stupid “nerd” who outstays his welcome with a vengeance. The show runs through the 19th so be sure to check it out next weekend if you can’t make it for this one.

LEGO Race Back to School Event!

Discover Mills Food Court. Saturday, sign in at 11am; race time 1pm – 4pm. Free.

The 6th Annual LEGO Race Back to School Event! challenges contestants to design a custom vehicle made of LEGO products and test it on the tracks on race day. Cars can be classified in one of three categories based on size, namely 10-19 studs, 20-27 studs and 28-36 studs. Trophies will be awarded to the winners of each category, and all kids participating receive a free LEGO Racers Driver’s License, as well as special LEGO Racers offers.
