The Georgia License Plate Design Contest reopened for voting on Monday, easing concerns that a misunderstanding about an optional “In God We Trust” sticker marred the outcome of the original results.
Of the eight semi-finalists, three designs featured the sticker on the bottom of the license plate while the other five displayed a county name, just like the current Georgia plates. According to officials, it was not clear to voters that the “In God We Trust” label would be an optional addition to the winning plate. Thus, to mitigate confusion, the Department of Revenue decided to showcase the eight individual designs with a blank placeholder to represent where individuals would display the sticker of their choosing.
The contest, which gives voters an opportunity to help choose the next official Georgia state license plate, was originally slated to end Friday, July 15th. Rather than announcing the winner, however, Revenue Commissioner Doug MacGinnitie used the scheduled press conference to publicize that the contest would start over on July 18th.
Voting will remain open until August 8th at 3 p.m. During this time, Georgia residents – along with the general public- can visit the official website to select which design they like best out of the eight semi-finalists. After the public vote narrows the selection to three finalists, Governor Nathan Deal will choose the winner.
The Department of Revenue will begin producing the winning plate in 2012. Perhaps they should also hold a competition for personalized license plate frames to feature an official state logo – whether it bears a county name or any other maxim.
