Happy Birthday Jerry! Let’s don our tie-dye!

People remember where they were when big events occurred.  I know where I was when I learned that Princess Diana died (in my friends car, a day or two before I went to college for my senior year), I know where I was when 9/11 happened (in DC at work, scary!) and I even remember where I was on August 9, 1995.  I was in London visiting a friend and we heard the sad news of Jerry Garcia’s passing.

I was in high school at the time (man, I’m totally dating myself with this post) and I had just sort of gotten into this hippie phase, you know, Grateful Dead, Phish, birkenstocks (with socks, haha!) and tie-dye.

Jerry Garcia was born on August 1, 1942 which means that if he was still alive, today would have been his 70th birthday. Kind of crazy, isn’t it?  Though it’s been 17 years since his passing and 47 years (!!) since the Grateful Dead formed, the spirit and style of the band and of Jerry himself are still present today.

While Birkenstocks with socks might not be in vogue in 2012, you know what still is?  Tie-dye.

Whether is a traditional tie-dyed t-shirt,

100% cotton tie dyed shirt

or maybe a fashion-forward women’s version,

District Girly Tie-dye

or a tie-dyed blanket,

Tie-dye blanket

these items are as stylish now as they were back in 1965!  Celebrate Mr. Garcia’s birthday with some tie-dye!  (But leave the birkenstocks with socks at home!) Happy Birthday, Jerry!
