Southwest Airlines Buys AirTran: Prepare Your Promotional Luggage Tags and Suitcases!

Welcome to this week’s edition of “Trending Topic Tuesday” where we share our take on what’s going on in the world and what promotional products would appropriately (or inappropriately) market the subject matter.

Price-conscious travelers, rejoice! Southwest Airlines has purchased AirTran Holdings, thereby grabbing hold of associated marketshare in 37 new destinations. With Southwest’s commitment to low prices and friendly service, why not fill out the information on your promotional luggage tags (not one, but TWO, as the airline permits each passenger to check up to two pieces of luggage free of charge!), pack your bags and take to the skies? Read more about Southwest’s new routes…

Once the merger is complete, Southwest will serve over 100 destinations, with four new airports planned for 2011. Atlanta is the major prize obtained through the deal, as Southwest’s business customers have expressed a demand for flying into the southeastern business hub for years. Also specified in the acquisition is Southwest’s immediate access to international destinations Mexico and the Caribbean, formerly served by AirTran’s extensive network of flights. The cost savings and added convenience achieved through the acquisition will undoubtedly lead to the creation of a larger low-fare airline with the resources to satisfy customers across the nation.

Many details of the deal have not yet been released to the general public, but I, for one, am excited to finally take advantage of the amazing fares and fabulous Southwest service I have been hearing about from classmates, family, friends and the media for years!
