The Anti-Promotional Product

Look, I’m just going to go ahead and say it…

I’m really glad the Olympics are over.

Yes I know it’s only once every four years and that it is, supposedly, a spectacular display of athletics, dedication, and various precious metals, but man am I glad I won’t have to deal with this for another 4 years. I found myself overwhelmed with dives, jumps, spins, kicks, tears, victories and new memes. And, apparantly, I wasn’t the only one.

With the same fervent intensity and worldwide interest that followed the Royal Wedding (on which we did a great series of posts about, check them out here), London has become slightly difficult to move around in for the everyday folk, and the British are using their famously composed snark to make a not so subtle statement.

In the spirit of the Royal Wedding Sick Bags, I present to you the Sick of Olympics Tote Bags.

While never directly mentioning the word “Olympics”, for copyright issues I imagine, they make hilarious statements like “It only took me 3 hours to get to work this morning. London” and “They’re all on steroids. London”. I imagine these to be statements many Londoners were making on a daily basis after all the frustrations that came along with having daily life interrupted for the games. These were such a hit that the website hosting them sold out on the first day or so that they were available.

Which brings me to my point: sometimes a little wit goes a long way. When it comes to promotional products knowing both sides of your audience is crucial: the rabid fan is just as important as the anti-fan. The company and designer behind this product saw the silver lining to heightened city security and ridiculous traffic jams due to the Olympics, and they managed to give even the most Olympic-weary person a smile with these tote bags.

So make the best out of a tough situation. Print a company wide inside joke on a mug, or make light of traffic, and maybe promote carpooling or public transportation at the same time, on a tote bag. Make them laugh and they’ll be reaching for that product for a long time.

Oh and in the spirit of updates, the brilliant mind behind the aforementioned Royal Wedding Sick Bags, released a new version: The Olympic Sick Bags. Just imagine pairing one of these plastic bags with a Sick of the Olympics Tote Bag and guidebook for underground London. A kit like this would be priceless for those who want to get away from it all.
