Celebrate Oakland with a Mai Tai

Many people may not know that the Mai Tai cocktail was invented in Oakland, California back in 1944. The name Mai Tai came from the Tahitian word for "good" and is made from rum, Curacao liqueur and lime juice. This Tiki-themed cocktail became world famous at Trader Vic's Polynesian restaurant that first opened its doors in Oakland. In 1972 the original Oakland restaurant was closed and re-opened in nearby Emeryville. The Trader Vic's restaurant chain has expanded throughout the United States and into Europe, Asia and the Middle East. Tourists and Mai Tai fans alike, still come to Trader Vic's flagship restaurants to try their legendary drinks and food as well as to purchase items such as Trader Vic's t-shirts, hats and commemorative glasses.
