Taco Bell and the age of fun

After last night, I could write in-depth analysis of each commercial that aired (or I could send you guys over to Slate’s amazing coverage over here) or I could instead mention Oreo’s blazing fast response to the mid game electrical blackout (but then again, Buzzfeed got the scoop on the post with about the same speed that it was originally posted at here). Instead of re-praising the best of the best, like the Budweiser commercial that seriously made me tear up a little and then realize I was about to cry over a beer commercial, to the lowest of the low (can GoDaddy just go away now? please?), I’ve chosen one commerical that I thought was hilarious but has been received with mixed reviews and has been easily overshadowed by the Dodge Ram ad, which to me seemed more like an awesome powerpoint than a multi-million production: The Taco Bell “Viva Young” ad.

I’ve mentioned before how I’m a big fan of advertising that goes against the grain, like the Anti-Olympic tote bags I blogged about last year, so I’m fond of this commercial for many reasons. If you take a second to look over this year’s commercials, and most years before it, you’ll see a huge emphasis placed on youth and beauty (see this year’s Calvin Klein commercial, which must have been awkward for all the father-daughter combinations enjoying the game together) and if you do happen to see the older generation they are often imparting wisdom upon the rest of us (such as the Dodge Ram commercial). In the Taco Bell commercial, they aren’t waiting for their grandchildren to show up to share a Coke: they are sneaking out windows and partying it up like any rebellious teenager in every coming of age movie. It’s hilarious without mocking old age and, if anything, it pokes fun at what my fellow millennials and I consider to be a great night out. It’s all soundtracked to a Spanish version of Fun.’s 2012 anthem, “We are Young” which only adds to the level of unexpected, but welcomed, absurdity.

After years of Chihuahua’s selling us tacos, Taco Bell has started to explore what more they could offer instead of almost offensive south of the border jokes. They’ve feature popular music, customer tweets and pictures in their ads in 2012 and have kicked off 2013 with it’s hysterical salute to old age. Taco Bell doesn’t need you to be a farmer, or a horse trainer, or even a guy with washboard abs, they just want you to have fun.

So how does this all tie back to promotional products? The takeaways are this: enjoy yourself. Laughter is a powerful thing, it makes you stick in your consumers minds. How do I know this? Well I just spent an entire blog praising Taco Bell and to be completely honest: I don’t even like their food.

Trending Now: Neon

Ok so this isn’t a “new” trend but it is definitely a trend that is still very hot!  Neon colors reminiscent of the 80’s are still here in 2013 in a big way.  From small piping details to big bold bags and apparel pieces featured in full neon glory. This trend is especially popular with the fashion conscious and younger demographics, but this is a fun trend that almost anyone can pull off!

While trend spotting out in Vegas I came across lots of neon. Some pieces are so new they aren’t featured on our site yet (don’t worry they should be very soon!)

This 20 oz stadium cup comes in bright neon colors and with a fun striped straw.

This single wall translucent black tumbler features a neon band and matching stirring straw.

Megan’s Trend Spotting: Shades of Green and Blue

It has been a busy month for the Merchandising Department at Pinnacle Promotions. First, a few of us attended the PPAI Expo in Las Vegas; the new products for 2013 are amazing! We are working now to add our favorites to the website. And personally, I was also able to attend the Atlanta Apparel Show at AmericasMart last week. This show focused on 2013 Women’s apparel and accessories. I was able to use this retail outlet to trend forecast for our promotional apparel market.

Entrance to the January 2013 Atlanta Apparel Show

One of the big trends I saw at both shows was the use of color. Shades of green and blue were very prevalent in many collections. As you may have seen in Lee’s post, Emerald Green is the Pantone color for 2013.

Bella + Canvas PPAI Expo Las Vegas 2013

I was happy to see these two colors dominate the offerings at the Apparel show as well as at the PPAI Expo. Both colors are easy for most complexions to wear. And with various shades available, it will be easy to find one to suit your brand. Here are my favorite women’s fashions in green and blue.

The Serena Blouse: Beautiful vertical pleats along the front and back, creating a flattering fit. Shown in Vivid Jade.

The Women’s Flowy Simple V-Neck Tee.   With fashion forward details, this drop sleeve tee has a relaxed fit and super soft hand. Shown here in Blue Marble.

Alternative Apparel Meegs Eco Jersey Ugly Stripe Tank: Stripes look fresh in green and chocolate. This tank is made from a polyester/cotton/rayon blend, has a flattering rounded bottom and racerback. Shown in Eco True Avocado/Eco True Brown Stripe.

The Emma Pullover. Perfect corporate casual 3/4 sleeve sweater. Featuring 3 button plackets along the front shoulders and subtle puff sleeves. Pictured above in Pacific Blue.

Port Authority Ladies Crosshatch Ruffle Blouse:  Feminine details like ruffled placket and front and back darts make this shirt a winner. Shown above in Chambray Blue. Also available in Deep Blue.

And I had to throw in one accessory. I am loving the Lexi Wristlet! Shown here in Turquoise, this case will accomodate a smartphone, credit cards and more. Perfect for running errands or a night on the town!

If you see something you like, feel free to contact us! Stay tuned for more Trend Spotting posts in the weeks to come!

Top 5 Essentials When Attending a Trade Show

Last week was my first PPAI Expo in Vegas.  I had been to other regional trade shows, but this is the largest, longest-running trade show in our industry.  Every year marketers from all over the country come to see, touch, and feel the newest and most unique promotional products and apparel.  The Mandalay Bay convention center has 2 floors filled with rows and rows of booths with products to see.  I knew I needed a game plan before I stepped on the show floor.  Speaking with co-workers that had been to the Expo before, I was given the 5 Essentials When Attending a Trade show.  Bonus, I also figured out 1 additional product we’ll be bringing with us next year!

1) Comfortable Shoes – with so much walking you need comfortable shoes to make it through a full show day.  If you can find a mix of comfort and style that is ideal.  I chose my grey, corduroy TOMS and they proved to be an excellent choice.

2) Tote Bag – You need a tote bag to carry your notebook or padfolio, business cards, phone, and other supplies, preferable with lots of pockets.  Pockets and dividers make finding your things quick and easy when time is of the essence.  Megan and I brought our new Pinnacle tote bags that had 4 separate outside pockets and internal pockets for your phone and business cards.

3) WATER – walking and talking can make you thirsty… I recommend you bring a bottle of water because a small soda is $5 at the convention center!

4)  Smartphone/Camera – When you are busy going booth to booth, you’ll want to take lots of pictures of the cool, unique products you find.  Tip: Take a picture of the company sign or business card so you remember where you saw that cool product.  Keep everything digital to avoid having sore arms and shoulders from catalogs and product samples. (Obviously there are some things just too cute not to pick up, hence the tote bag)

5) Hand Sanitizer – shaking hands and touching products that thousands of other people are touching is less than sanitary.  Make sure you bring hand sanitizer or snag a promotional hand sanitizer that someone is giving away.

BONUS Essential for trade shows – Energy Bar (no not a protein bar, but that’s not a bad idea either) an Energy Bar or Emergency Mobile Device Battery, as they are being called is a small compact battery device that once charged will recharge your smartphone or other mobile device.  I know my phone died on me every day around 4pm when I still had more pictures to take and people to communicate with.  I will definitely bring something like this with me next year!

Hope you enjoyed my list of essential products when attending a trade show.  Many of these products that are valuable at a trade show can be imprinted with your logo and are great giveaway items for those attendees that didn’t come prepared (custom bottled water, tote bags, hand sanitizer, etc).  My personal tip would be to have a “recharging station” at one end of your booth with chairs, custom bottled water, and a place to recharge your phone.  While your potential clients are resting their feet and recharging, you can be building relationships and provide marketing collateral or a promotional video for them to watch.

Are there any other products I left out?  Let me know if there are other products you feel are essential when attending a tradeshow in the comments below.

Almost Promotional Products

Our Merchandising Managers are back from the PPAI trade show out in Vegas, and they’ve returned with lots of new pictures and stories about what to expect this year. For a sneak peek about all the trends they’ll be blogging about in the near future check out the Facebook album they created here.

So it’s with this spirit of “new-ness” that I’ve decided to take a quick break from my usual blogging style of pointing out items new and old on our website and how they could be applied to different promotional campaigns. I’m taking a cue from our ever awesome Pinterest account and one board in specific, the Not a Promotional Product… Yet board.

Promotional Items for Weird Weather

Lately, I feel like I’m always complaining about the weather in Atlanta but with weekends like the one that just ended it’s hard not to. Our cold spell was broken by temperatures in the high 60’s to mid 70’s. I even saw people in shorts! But today we’re back to rain and the cold. So in honor of this backwards weather, I’ve put together a list of items that would help you recipients transition during these weird weather days.

Our First Deal of the Month for 2013

January came quickly here at Pinnacle, which meant we had to select our first Deal of the Month for 2013.  We started researching products that would be good for the beginning of the year and we thought a nice water bottle or sports bottle would be a popular item.  With the majority of New Year’s Resolutions being about getting healthy and working out,  the 25 oz Aluminum Bike Bottle was the perfect choice (at a price as low as $3.20!).  This sleek, Camelbak look alike that not only looks good, but the aluminum material keeps your water cold.
