Bake a cake in that promotional mug!

Chances are that you’ve received (or purchased) a promotional coffee mug in your lifetime. And while mugs are traditionally thought of as vessels for hot beverages like tea or coffee, there’s a bunch of other things you can do with your ceramic mugs including one of my favorites: bake a cake.

I don’t know about you, but I like single servings of things.  Put an entire cake in front of me and I’ll probably eat it all.  But bake a cake in a mug and boom: automatic portion control.

(Can we talk about how excited I was to find a picture of a mug cake that’s actually in a promotional mug? It’s the little things.)

I was inspired to write this post by an article that I saw in Buzzfeed about snacks you can cook in a mug.  Then I went onto Pinterest just to see what mug cakes I could find and, unsurprisingly, there are boards upon boards dedicated to recipes of cakes you can make in mugs.

There are tons of decadent desserts but one that really stuck out to me was this 100 calorie 2 minute mug cake.  I have all the ingredients at home and you bet that I’m going home tonight and baking up (nuking up?) one of these tonight.  I’ll report back.

It’s National Margarita Day

So it’s rainy and gross here in Atlanta (and snowy and gross in other parts of the country), and really that’s the perfect weather to celebrate National Margarita Day!  I mean, you might not be on a tropical resort with a drink in hand, but there’s no reason why you can’t fill up your favorite glass with a cold beverage and pretend, right?

I’m going to let you in on a secret: despite having a fun time writing this post, I don’t really like margaritas. I prefer a glass of wine, really. On the rare occasion when I decide to indulge in a margarita (like today after work to celebrate this holiday, perhaps), I have to admit, I don’t know the difference between the different types that are offered on restaurant menus. Sure, I know that on the rocks is with ice and frozen is blended, but my knowledge of margaritas only goes that far. Texas margarita? What the heck is that?

So, for those of you who share my margarita naivety, I did a little research for you.  A traditional margarita is comprised of three ingredients – tequila, triple sec and lime juice.  Triple sec is used as the sweetener, but you could also use agave nectar, Cointreau or Grand Marnier.  A lot of bartenders use sour mix as well.  Salt is typically put around the rim of the glass.  The contrast of the salt with the sweetness of the liquid enhances the flavor and the experience.

And a Texas Margarita?  It has orange juice in it.

Quadriginoctuple Frap (in a promotional mug?)

Last year, we did a post about the most expensive Starbucks drink.  $23.60 drinks are sooooo 2012 though.  In 2013, the most expensive Starbucks drink came out to a whopping $47.30.

The infamous drink is a Quadriginoctuple Frap, and the main contributor to the phenomenal cost is the 48 shots of espresso.  48 shots?  I’ve had a triple shot latte before and thought I was going to have a heart attack.  Adding to the cost was also soy milk, mocha drizzle, matcha powder, protein powder, caramel brulee topping, strawberries, two bananas, caramel drizzle, frappuccino chips, vanilla bean and whipped cream.

According to the man who ordered the drink, Beau Chevassus, he actually put a lot of thought and research into finding the perfect combination to get such an expensive drink.  The baristas at his local Starbucks were excited to help out.

Yup, it’s $47.30, but he did save ten cents by bringing in his own travel mug.

Upcycling Your Promotional Products

According to Wikipedia, the term “upcycle” was coined in 1994 and is defined as “the process of converting waste materials or useless products into new materials or products of better quality for better environmental value.”   The thought was that instead of taking old products and breaking them down, a more environmentally advantageous thing to do would be to build them up into better products that have more value than their originals.

I think that any company who uses promotional products is, at some point, faced with an overflow of products that they don’t need anymore.  Whether it’s because their logo has changed or the product is out of date (like a calendar) or brands are just looking for something new, there are many reasons why older products don’t get used anymore.  So, instead of throwing them away, why not get a little crafty and make those products into something new?

Larabar had a great example of upcycling old promotional products on their facebook page.

Larabar worked with Western Carolina Sewing Company to turn some of their outdated promotional material, like t-shirts, into totes and pouches.  Not only does this create fun new products, but it promotes an eco-friendly message at the same time.

This idea applies not only to the companies who want to do the upcycling themselves, like Larabar, but also to people who have received promotional products in the past.  I’m a runner.  I can’t tell you how many race t-shirts I’ve received.  And while I don’t want to necessarily throw them away since they hold memories, I don’t always wear all of them either.  This would be the perfect thing to upcycle.  Just a quick Pinterest search led me to all of these great ideas of what I could do with my shirts.

  1. Turn a shirt into a tote bag
  2. Turn a shirt into a baby bib
  3. Turn a shirt into a scarf

Have you ever upcycled any promotional products before?  Let us know what you did with them in the comments.
