June 16th marks the day each year that literary lovers and Eire-philes around the world gather to celebrate Leopold Bloom’s odyssey through Dublin.

Bloomsday began in 1954, when several Irish authors and a cousin of James Joyce took a pilgrimage through Dublin meant to mirror the events in Joyce’s Ulysses.
The book takes place on June 16th, 1904, and chronicles an ordinary day in the life of an ordinary Dublin citizen, Leopold Bloom. Far from ordinary, however, Ulysses has become famous as a seminal work of Modernist literature for its stream-of-consciousness style and experimental prose. Ulysses parallels the events and characters of Homer’s Odyssey, with, in Joyce’s own words, enough “enigmas and puzzles [to] keep the professors busy for centuries arguing over what I meant.”
Today fans of Joyce pay homage to Bloom’s fictional adventures in cities far from Dublin.
