Oreo Cookie Celebrates 100th Birthday

On this day in 1912, the Oreo Cookie was born. It’s hard to imagine that before that, children and adults alike never had the pleasure of dunking an Oreo into a glass of cold milk, or pulling one apart and eating the creme filling first. It’s no wonder that, 100 years later, Oreo cookies are still going strong as one of the most popular types of cookie.

Best and Worst Promotional Snacks for the Waistline…

People often claim that their “sweet tooth” causes them to pile on the pounds, but a recent diet study has proven that a salty tooth is actually the biggest contributor to unwanted weight gain. The results of the major study, which were featured in yesterday’s New England Journal of Medicine, identified potato chips as the most substantial source of weight gain over contenders like ice cream, sweets, soda and French fries.

Starbucks Offering (Free) Promotional Snacks to Celebrate their Birthday!

Normally when we blog about Starbucks here, we talk about how they effectively use promotional drinkware to promote their brand. By offering discounts to those who bring their own reusable drinkware items to hold their coffee, they not only increase brand awareness, but they also drive repeat business, which is especially important in today’s economy.

In addition to saving customers money, Starbucks also started helping customers to save time by paying for their lattes and cappuccinos via a smart phone app, which we discussed here back in the end of January.

Now, Starbucks is offering consumers promotional snacks as a way to celebrate their 40th birthday, promote their recent rebranding efforts, and advertise the introduction of their “petites” line. Customers will receive free promotional snacks item from the Starbucks petite treat line- which includes bite-sized treats such as cake pops and mini cupcakes- when they purchase a beverage between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m., today through Saturday.

Promotional Snacks: Coming Soon to a Runway Near You?

You might have seen Kim’s post back in September about the now-infamous meat dress Lady Gaga wore to the MTV Video Music Awards. The dress sparked commentary from everyone from vegans to meat-lovers, fashionistas to biologists (who said Gaga’s dress was likely crawling with maggots during the awards show).

While Lady Gaga was the first (or at least the most famous) person to wear a dress made out of food, she certainly won’t be the last, as artists and fashion designers have proven with some recent creations, showcased in an article by Diana Adams of Bit Rebels. Who knows: maybe someday soon clothing and accessories made out of promotional snacks will be the next big thing in marketing?

Free Promotional Snacks for Wimpy Kids and Non-Wimpy Kids Alike

The Diary of a Wimpy Kid books and movie (with a sequel tentatively scheduled to hit theaters in March 2011) have experienced a swift journey to success. The wildly successful book series earned author Jeff Kinney a 74 week stint on the New York Times Best Seller list for children’s books, as audiences couldn’t help but fall in love with the books’ relatable protagonist, middle school student Greg Heffley. To generate buzz for the release of the fifth installment in the Wimpy Kid series, publisher Amulet Books, a division of Abrams, is launching a cross-country ice-treat truck bookstore tour. A grand total of 26,000 promotional snacks and 26,000 books are involved with the execution of this nationwide campaign!*

*Please note: I heard about this event after this week’s Weekend Guide had been posted, but at noon tomorrow (Saturday, August 14th), one of two Diary of a Wimpy Kid tour buses begins its two week run with an appearance at Little Shop of Stories in Decatur.
